Mention the word “organist” and most people have an idea of either a somewhat befuddled lady peering down her spectacles, crouched over a 100-year old Wurlitzer, or a gentleman (often of British extraction), a little uptight in a well-starched gown, wondering why they couldn’t be at another church where they would be better “appreciated”.
Although my descriptions are a bit of a caricature, I have met enough Music Directors of churches to know that I am not that far off from the truth.
And for your information, I do not fit either description. At all.
While I’m somewhat irreverent, I take my Music Director position as seriously as I need to. I’m a pretty normal guy who tries to bring something of interest to each service, sometimes in subtle ways, and sometimes in less so. Most times, things go really well, but when I fall on my face, I’m glad to have an extremely supportive Minister and congregation behind me.
I feel that faith is not an intellectual experience, but an emotional one. Music and the arts’ role in deepening faith can be very potent. The arts are a manifestation of spiritual expression and have a power to touch us to the core of our selves, providing a vital conduit to a positive worship experience.
