BLACK HISTORY MONTH

BLACK SOUL

The Black Soul is an animated short by Martine Chartrand that
dives into the heart of Black culture in Canada via an exhilarating
trip though history as a young boy traces his roots through the
stories his grandmother shares with him about the events that
shaped their cultural heritage.

WHEN MOSES WOKE

When Moses Woke is a one-hour devotional performance drama
inspired by the combined experiences of Afro-Canadian/American
heroine Harriet Tubman and numerous Freedom Seekers who
traveled North to escape slavery.

Drawing on actual events from Tubman's triumphant life, the film
portrays the spiritual awakening of a woman named Moses and
focuses on the fact that Tubman was prone to sudden drifts of sleep
by the use of dream sequences that articulate the mental, physical
and spiritual journey on the Underground Railroad.

This Gemini award-winning performance drama is explored
through Afro-modern dance, poetic realism and the music of
triumph and resilience, featuring the voices of Jackie Richardson
and Toronto artist Motion.
