Christmas is approaching and it’s freezing cold outside. But Ryan and I are happily settled for
lunch - he literally twinkles across the table from me – such a fun person! Food is ordered, all
issues of the church resolved, we begin our interview….but Yikes! Ryan is so terrific! Drama
over lunch – I love it and am engaged…
What brought you to St Andrew’s, Ryan?
Being a professional singer, my introduction to St Andrew’s was subbing for a tenor in the choir. And after many gigs, it was a smooth transition to becoming a soloist. That was fourteen years ago and I just love this place!
What keeps you coming?
St Andrew’s is my home. In my line of work, I am in many venues doing gigs but St Andrew’s is the one constant in my life. People are extremely friendly whether it be at coffee after the
service or a monthly lunch. Everyone mixes. And there are always new people. The staff are
amazing and Jeff is great.
Now many of you may not be familiar with Ryan as he is in the gallery on Sunday mornings, out of sight, operating the a/v equipment. But Ryan is one of the cornerstones of St Andrew’s!
Tell me about your artistic career…
I began singing professionally as a teenager. Raised in the west end of Toronto, I have sung in almost every church in Toronto. After high school, I completed a BMusic in Voice Performance at U of T. Then a Masters in Voice at Florida State in Tallahassee. Returning to Canada, I completed the young artist’s program at the Montreal Opera which resulted in singing performances across Canada and Europe. It’s funny because my preference and my heart was for musical theatre but teachers always encouraged opera! Ah well!
Ryan’s expertise today is recording singers and choirs. These range from artists who are
auditioning for positions to recording choirs for their repertoire. Working with artists is
especially rewarding. I try to help them understand the technology which goes with their craft. I am part mentor, engineer, and yes, therapist. I’ve been there, know the steps required, and nothing gives me more purpose in life than helping others.
Ryan is very enthusiastic about the new a/v system at St Andrew’s. It’s probably the best in the city and will open many opportunities for concerts, recordings, and performances which will only increase our visibility.
